I first studied this poem in Standard 6 in 1995 but the words of this poem always stayed in my heart. Although many years have gone by, the message of it is still relevant even today. It teaches us to keep humanity away from the division of religion. The religion has always played major role in lives of many lives since its origin… There is also another version for this poem.

हिन्दू कहता मंदिर मेरा, मंदिर मेरा धाम है,
मुस्लिम कहता मक्का मेरा अल्लाह का इमान है.
दोनों लड़ते, लड़ लड़ मरते, लड़ते लड़ते ख़तम हुए.
दोनों ने एक दूजे पर न जाने क्या क्या ज़ुल्म किये.
किसका ये मकसद है, किसकी चाल है ये जान लो,

नेता ने सत्ता की खातिर कौमवाद से काम लिया,
धरम के ठेकेदार से मिलकर लोगों को नाकाम किया,
भाई बंटे टुकड़े-टुकड़े में, नेता का ईमान बढा
वोट मिले और नेता जीता शोषण को आधार मिला.
वक़्त नहीं बीता है अब भी, वक़्त की कीमत जान लो.

प्रजातंत्र में प्रजा को लूटे ये कैसी सरकार है,
लाठी गोली ईश्वर अल्लाह ये सारे हथियार हैं,
इनसे बचो और बच के रहो और लड़कर इनसे जीत लो,
हक है तुम्हारा चैन से रहना अपने हक को छीन लो,
अगर हो तुम शैतानी से तंग, ख़त्म करो शैतान को,
धरती बांटी, सागर बांटा, मत बांटो इंसान को. मंदिर-मस्जिद….

English Translation:

The temple, the mosque, and the church have divided up the almighty,
the land is divided, the sea is divided, but please, don’t divide the human being…

The Hindu says the temple is sacred to him
The Muslim says Mecca is his Allah’s pride
both fight, keep fighting, died fighting
torturing each other in unthinkable ways
find out who really wants this, whose strategy this is

The politician used communalism to gain power
