What is contour farming

Contour farming, the practice of tilling sloped land along lines of consistent elevation so as to conserve rainwater and to scale back soil losses from surface erosion. Farming on the contour reduces sheet and rill erosion and therefore the resulting sediment deposition at the foot of the slope or off-site. It can increase water infiltration, thereby reducing the transport of nutrients and organics to surface water and increasing water storage within the profile.
